You can also go for individual nutrients, especially if your doctor has discovered that your body lacks a certain type of vitamin or supplement. If you go this route, you should be prepared to take large doses of that particular supplement. The good news is that large doses of individual nutrients can alleviate a specific nutrient deficiency. Because the FDA has not created a list of helpful or harmful dietary supplements, marketers are free to advertise their products with little oversight.  You are likely to see weight loss supplementary diets with outrageous marketing campaigns. Some of them claim to have miraculous weight loss abilities. Other common supplementary vitamins are usually passed off as sexual enhancement aids or bodybuilding posters.

 

Although regulations dictate what can be advertised or stated, manufacturers have found a way of bypassing these regulations. Some of them use flimsy or non-existent scientific evidence to support the benefits of their products. You wouldn’t be surprised to pump into a dietary supplement claiming to treat arthritis. For example, if you take huge amounts of vitamin K, your blood thinners will become ineffective. Overdosing on vitamin E can also increase your chances of getting nosebleeds or being bruised. Recent research has shown that St. John’s wort can reduce the ability of antidepressants to cure depression.

 

Sometimes, it is not overdosing that causes the problem. You may use small amounts of a specific dietary supplement in some cases, but it can become a problem if you use it for extended periods. For example, taking vitamin B6 supplements for more than 12 months can destroy your nerve responses. You may also face several seizures during the process.
